Application: Entry level hard tail
"Application: Entry level hard tail MTB used mainly on paved roads and paths. This crankset replaced the original 42/34/24t crankset. Installed this Shimano 48/38/28t and a new longer chain then adjusted the derailleurs. I was wanting a higher top gear ratio and this a perfect, 48t front/12t rear."

Opted for this over the "replaceable" chainring model
"I bought two of these for a hybrid/road bike and a mountain bike. The 22/32/42 on my mountain bike is what I had used before. I had the Alivio version with "replaceable chainrings", but I asked at my LBS and they quoted me ~$1/tooth for replacement rings, which made buying a whole new crank the same price as a replacement medium or large ring. The 28-48 tooth version is definitely a big step up on gear ratio. I find that the "useable" gear range for most of my around-town (central PA, hilly) is pretty narrow which I suspect will wear down my middle ranges faster, and while it's nice to be able to pedal downhill I think I'd rather have stuck the 22/42 version just to spread the wear around more total gears while riding."
Pay attention to derailleur capacity
"Pay attention when ordering a derailleur to pair with the 28-48 tooth crankset that you need to mind the maximum clearance of the front and rear derailleur--absolutely mandatory for the front derailleur, and if you overdo the capacity of the rear you will be unable to shift to the largest/largest cog--and if you did under load, something would almost certainly break spectacularly. While the cog rings aren't removable, I found that sourcing replacements cost as much as this entire crankset."

A nice upgrade on a 7-speed bike.
"Needed to replace a warped crank and bottom bracket on my son’s new bike. This crankset wasn’t a perfect match as it need a a 119mm bb, and this crank needs a 122. 5mm, but the chain line wasn’t that affected. The crank itself is perfectly true and is a nice upgrade for a 7 or 8-speed drivetrain."
